O n February 9th, 2019, the Association of Grassroot Journalism together with Household of Love Centre collaborated to hold a community engagement in Kibra’s, Makina ward. This was forum was aimed at engaging the community to understand the dynamics of Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) in Kibra community and to build their capacity to respond and report such cases to the relevant authorities. The target group in this forum was the youth of Kibra and, atleast 65 of them turned up. Of importance to note is the embarrassment and discomfort that the youth have to go through when they share one roomed house with their parents. The target group benefited from the activities by: –
-
- Learning that SGBV acts not only harm women but the community in general.
- Learning about policies, laws and legal instruments that protect them from any forms of violence.
- Gaining knowledge on how to report SGBV cases to relevant authorities.
- Understanding that gender roles can be interchanged and still be performed by the opposite gender.
